Presentation Day

What went right?

I think the over-all class as a whole did very well. I think that all the research that was put into finding just the right information to pull the whole project together made things go right. I think using the projector, went right. I also think the teams that worked together went right.

What went wrong?

Well for myself and Vicky, I think our presentation could have went a lot better if we would of decided to be partners way sooner than we did, which was last thursday. Our communication was off and we really didn't get started together until the wensday before the presentation. I wish we could of included more information using the techniques we learned in class.

Comparing our presentation to the others, what could of been different?

Compared to the other presentations, I think ours wasn't up to parr. I think the other were much better. I would suggest that the people that aren't as fluent on the computer get as much help and intruction as possible.

Example: Take notes do more reading and ask as many questions in class and in Lab as possible.

Photosharing in a Business Management setting

I think photos sharing in a business management  setting is a great idea. I believe visual learning and sharing through pictures can be more effective than traditional speaches and regular e-mails. Also when someone gets a vision through a photo they have seen, it will be good to have photosharing system to allow all to link in and see the picture whereever there is a computer.

Job Fair Observations

What tech is being utilized today is it effective? Why?

The tech that I have seen used the most is obviously something to do with computers, everything from broadcasting, advertising, e-commerce, social networking, research, to personal filing and so on. The one JobFair business that stood out the most with the use of technology was the, American Bride, Art of Noise Entertainment, they use the computer to set up appointments, to compose a list of music that a customer wants played at their party, someone can e-mail the DJ on a last minute basis which is called, “Flash Jam” and a DJ will be sent out right then. All of this is possible because of technology. So technology is very effective in the business world and makes things run much faster and smoother.

What digital technology could/should have been utilized? Why?

I found, with most of the businesses I talked to they all use technology as far as web site and fancy business brochures and business cards, which I’m sure were made up and printed from a computer and printer. I think they could have used more digital interaction far as bringing a laptop with then to do a short presentation, and also, because it could show what their business is about in a more protocol type of way. I also think it would of been nice to see a QR code on some of there advertisments.

Privacy To Be or Not To Be...

Privacy is very hard to keep in this digital day and age. In this digital world of e-commerce, digital filling, and social networking such as, Facebook and Twitter, it is very hard to keep your private life protected from people whom you may not want to have your personal information. Some businesses are so interested in making a profit that they will sale your personal information to other companies. Doing business through e-commerce and sharing information through social web sites is always a risk, because one never knows whose watching or monitoring the site. Every other day there is a news report about someone getting their privacy invaded from someone else hacking into a business or someone’s personal files. One would have to never log onto the internet in order to hopefully keep their privacy, but that wouldn’t be practical or very easy to do since in a matter of 10 to 15 years that’s about the only way business will be conducted.

Question Chapter #10

Social networking and the “wisdom of crowds” help companies improve their marketing simply by being able to reach a far more vast number of customers and potential customers than any other form of advertising. With social networking and crowdsourcing companies are able to get the opinions of lots of people who are networking over the Internet which makes e-commerce much less expensive than any other form of commerce. Companies are able to see what products the public likes and dislike and are better able to give customers what they want. Word of mouth is one of the best forms of marketing and advertising a product, so social networking and the wisdom of crowds are perfect ways for soliciting free predictions of how certain products are working. Also, this allows companies to build better relationships with existing customers while at the same time gaining new customers.

Behavioral targeting is when tracking is being done on the clicks of different web sites to find out what certain people are interested in. This, allow companies to know what consumer are interested in so they are able to customize their web site to suit the customer’s individual needs. After, being able to monitor and learn the behavior of consumers, the advertising networking becomes a lot easier.

The Non-Verbal Work Environment

Verbal and non-verbal language is very important in the business world. Verbal langue means to communicate with words of some sort; while non-verbal can be anything from facial expressions, to body language, and more anything that allows you to communicate with out words. The games we played in class where very interesting. We had to separate into two teams of three one person was CEO and had permission to speak to the middle man and the supervisor who was able to relay information to the peon the person left in the class room who had to build a truck out of Lagos, which was my job, but I could not speak. The CEO was out in the hallway and the middle man would go out and gather information then come in to tell me a one word clue that was given to her, but she couldn’t talk to me and I couldn’t talk to her so, she had to point at different colors and shapes to try and get me to understand what pieces to put together to build a truck. Then we did something different with larger blocks of different shapes and sizes and also a sheet of paper with lines and numbers on it. I had to build something while someone else had their back to me with the same blocks and sheet of paper. I had to explain to the other person what I was building and she had to try to build the same with only my instructions. These two verbal and non-verbal games were so difficult for me and I learned how important it is and would be in the work environment for instruction to be clear and understood in order for everyone to be able to work together in harmony and run a business in a professional manor.

What's The Big Deal About RSS?

What is RSS (Really Simple Syndication)? RSS are frequently published notifications such as blog posts, news headlines, audio, as well as video that are web based and are formatted in a standardized way. RSS consists of different parts, the documents better known as the RSS feed, web feed, or channel is the information within the published notification also called a notification list. A XML is a computer program that contains markup language and automatically repackages and describes new information in web sites and blogs.  There are many of these publications that pop-up over the web daily and most if not all have important information that businesses can use to further their success and get an edge on their competition. But there are so many of these RSS that it would be impossible for any one person to read and be able to run a business, so they have special computer programs to do this job for them, their called RSS aggregators or RSS readers their job is to read through these RSS and only keep the ones that are relevant to the company who has hired them. Major businesses would benefit more than small businesses because RSS’s would allow major businesses to keep up with information that is needed to stay up with everyday news that could a have major impact on making crucial decisions in their business. While small businesses can benefit from RSS it could become more of a downfall if the cost of hiring an aggregator outweighs the profit being made.

Chapter #6 Responses

The components in the data hierarchy are bits, bytes, fields, records, files, and databases. Bits, represents the smallest unit of data a computer can handle. Bytes are groups of bits and represent a single character, such as a letter, number, or another symbol. Fields are a group of characters into a word, a group of words or complete number such as a person’s name or age. Records are a group of fields such as a person’s name, course taken, the date, and the grade. Files are a group of records of the same type. A Database is a group of files.
The significance of entities, attributes, and key fields are that they are the most important part of the data hierarchy the entities are a person, place, thing, or event on which we store and maintain information. The attribute describes each characteristic or quality of a particular entity, and the key field retrieves, updates, or sorts the information database.
The problems with traditional filing are, data redundancy, program-data dependency, lack of flexibility, poor security and lack of data sharing and availability. Date redundancy is a problem because it’s a lot of information being repeated in many different files, just as program-data redundancy is too. Different departments repeating the same information in files can all be put in one big database management system for easy access by many different departments. With traditional files there is a lake of flexibility because one will have to open up each file in order to retrieve information that can easily be retrieved from a database management system; this is the same with sharing and availability. The lake of security exists because the traditional filing is not organized and is open for people to get into who should not have access.
A database is a software system that contains multi functions and makes storing information more easily organizable. Database management systems allow flexibility, security, data sharing and availability and cuts down on the data redundancy.

I posted this picture of a smoking baked potato because my kids have been asking me to quit smoking and get off the couch. This picture is a reminder to me of how my children see me in hopes to get me motivated to get up and quit.

What is the Digital Firm?

The Digital Firm is a comany that is ran mainly all on the Internet or digitally, if not on a laptop, iPod, hand-held device like a Tablet, Blackberry, iPhone etc... these businesses can be ran from anywhere in the world because they don't actually need a building to be ran. Most of it's business does not need face-to-face interaction there business meetings can be ran virtually. Their digital networking allows them to communicate with suppliers, custumors, and employees without ever meeting in person. The digital firm has made it very easy to run a business on the other side of the world from your own home thanks to technology. This is a more efficient way of doing business also because it cuts out on a lot of overhead and unnessasry cost of having to pay for building cost, insurance, employees and other cost of having a traditionally ran business.

Welcome

Hello Everyone,
My name is Vickie P., I'm taking courses to become a business owner (Business Management). I'm a middle-aged woman who is excited to be back in school after being out for so long. I have 3 grown kids and a 13 year old still at home with me, so me going back to school is really a challenge. I've worked verious jobs such as Assistant Mg. at Subway, Little Tike, cashier at Value City Department store, Summit Plastic Inc., a couple of printing companies here in Akron and in Canton, and a few other jobs throughout the years, and this is the reason I decided to go back to school to further my education in the business world. I plan to start a business of my own once I finish school next year. I'm not quit sure what the business will be yet, I want to see what the economy is like and what will be a long term demand at that time. But other than that, I like to dance, hike, play football with my many grand children, watch judge shows and cook just to name some of my interests. I look forward to learning all about the digital firm and other Management Information Systems.
